Why Does Costco Give Away So Many Free Samples?
Do you think they just randomly just pick stuff to give away? No they actually have a company dedicated to promote samples of new and regular products. I can’t tell you how many times I went there for something else, and one bite of whatever they are giving away and I have added a giant bag of that item to my cart. Jerry Seinfeld said about comedians: “We are in the business of selling ‘hot air’.” Dance teachers are much like that. Yes it is our time but does the client walk away with a physical product besides gained knowledge? Therefore it is imperative that part of what the client gets is a great experience. So when we give away a free group class, party or private, are we giving anything away but hot air?
I finally understood it when our classes attained more men than women. In the early days I had classes of 3 or 4 guys and twice as many women, The men were probably with a wife who was reluctant to share. The class was dreadful because it had no energy. When I began to give out free passes all over the place but especially to guys, my numbers shot up. Now here is where you will get it wrong. You’re probably thinking ‘Yeah but you’re still getting paid for 8 people!” Possibly, but where it changed the dynamic was that the class was soooooo much more fun to teach, the students had a better experience, and the women were spreading the word that this class had more men than women. Through simple WORD OF MOUTH, our classes grew exponentially. So the difference- your paid students have a boring time and you’re spending money to continuously replenish your newcomers and mine were having so much fun they were bringing their friends without guest parties and constant cajoling.
Putting My Money Where My Mouth Is- My Version of a Costco Sample Just For You...
What to understand about this class. There were at least 80 to 90 paying beginner students in this class, There were probably 5 advanced level students taking this class for free, about 40% were paying intermediates taking a BEGINNING level class because they got to practice their basics, impress the newbies, and do something until the 10pm practice session. And yes, quite a few first-timers were there for their first free lesson.
Everything we did was scripted, planned, for a reason. Why do I give away free training? Well you could copy every single thing we do, but if you don’t understand the psychology behind what we are doing, you are giving away free product and the following week you are back to teaching the same 8 students.
What Do You Mean By Experience?
Accept this- NOBODY comes into a dance studio because they want to be on Dancing With The Stars. They come in because they are looking for something fun, to meet someone, to forget someone, to be part of something. When WE check our ego at the door, we make it about the EXPERIENCE not turning the class into something resembling a Catholic funeral. Our training starts with the Psychology of why- Why they are learning to dance, why they chose your studio, why your current way of running your studio struggles.
But You're Doing it With Salsa- Will It Work For Traditional Ballroom or Swing Studios?
I don’t know who decided to call us a Salsa studio because we never did. Yes we were known for massive Salsa classes but we had very large West Coast Swing classes. When we started the studio we were primarily Ballroom- International and American. Our classes were small. With Robert teaching our W/C classes they grew very large. When we grew we hired teachers. Not all teachers were of our mindset and some classes were typically small. As we trained a whole new group of teachers, we could hand off our big classes and build the weaker classes up. Our methods worked for Ballroom just as well as they did for Salsa. Ballroom may not have the most in-demand dance but taught using our methods, many people who came in for street dances soon try ballroom dances as well. Trust me- it’s not WHAT we teach, but How we teach.
